The Truth About Blackheads: They're Probably Not What You Think
By Omega Laser & Skin | Abbotsford, BC
If you've ever looked closely at your nose in the mirror and thought, "Ugh... my blackheads are awful," you're definitely not alone.
It's one of the most common concerns I hear from clients.
But here's something that surprises almost everyone...
A lot of what people think are blackheads aren't blackheads at all.
More often than not, they're something called sebaceous filaments. They look similar, but they're completely different, and knowing the difference can save you a lot of frustration and help you choose products and treatments that actually work.
Blackheads vs. Sebaceous Filaments: What's the Difference?
Let's start with sebaceous filaments because they're the ones most people mistake for blackheads.
Sebaceous filaments are tiny structures that line your pores and help move oil from the sebaceous gland to the surface of your skin. They play an important role in keeping your skin healthy and hydrated.
In other words...
They're supposed to be there.
Everyone has them.
They're usually easiest to see on the nose, chin and forehead because those areas naturally produce more oil.
Blackheads, on the other hand, are clogged pores.
When oil, dead skin cells and debris become trapped inside a pore and are exposed to air, they oxidize and turn dark. That's what creates the black appearance.
So while they can look similar, they're actually two completely different things.
Why Do They Look So Similar?
Because they're both sitting inside your pores.
Sebaceous filaments usually appear as tiny grey or yellowish dots that are fairly uniform across the nose.
Blackheads tend to be darker, larger and more random in where they appear.
It can be difficult to tell the difference just by looking in the mirror, which is why so many people spend years trying to treat the wrong problem.
Are Pore Strips Worth It?
I'll admit...
There's something incredibly satisfying about peeling off a pore strip and seeing everything it removed.
But despite how impressive they look, they don't actually fix the underlying issue.
Pore strips remove material from the surface of the pore, but they don't stop your skin from producing oil or prevent pores from filling again.
If what you're seeing is mostly sebaceous filaments, they'll naturally become noticeable again because they're a normal part of healthy skin.
That's why pore strips often feel like they work... until a few days later when everything looks exactly the same.
So What Actually Helps?
The goal isn't to have invisible pores.
The goal is healthy, balanced skin.
If congestion is a concern, a consistent skincare routine will always outperform quick fixes.
Depending on your skin, that may include:
Salicylic acid (BHA) to help clear inside the pore.
Retinoids to encourage healthy cell turnover.
Professional exfoliation.
Regular facials and extractions.
A skincare routine that's suited to your skin type.
There isn't a product that permanently removes blackheads or sebaceous filaments, but there are plenty of ways to keep them looking less noticeable.
A Conversation I Have Almost Every Week
One of my favourite moments during a facial is when I explain the difference between blackheads and sebaceous filaments.
I can almost see the relief on someone's face.
For years they've been scrubbing harder, buying pore strips, or trying every "miracle" product they come across, convinced they're doing something wrong.
In reality, much of what they've been trying to remove is completely normal.
Once you understand how your skin actually works, it becomes much easier to stop chasing perfection and start building a routine that supports healthy skin instead.
The Bottom Line
Not every dark dot on your nose is a blackhead.
In fact, many of them are sebaceous filaments doing exactly what they're designed to do.
Understanding the difference helps you set realistic expectations, avoid wasting money on products that overpromise, and focus on skincare that actually supports your skin over the long term.
If you're ever unsure what you're seeing in the mirror, that's exactly what I'm here for. Sometimes a quick conversation can save months of trial and error.
Let's Clear Up a Few Things
Can I permanently get rid of sebaceous filaments?
No. Because they're a normal part of healthy skin, they'll always be there to some degree. The goal is to keep them less noticeable, not eliminate them completely.
Why are blackheads black?
The dark colour isn't dirt. It's oil and dead skin cells that have oxidized after being exposed to air.
Can pore strips damage my skin?
Used occasionally, they're generally safe for most people. However, using them too often can irritate the skin, especially if it's sensitive.
Will professional facials help with blackheads?
Yes. Professional exfoliation and extractions can safely remove congestion and improve the overall appearance of your skin. Regular treatments paired with a good home care routine usually provide the best long-term results.
Should I squeeze blackheads at home?
It's tempting, but squeezing can damage the surrounding skin and increase the risk of irritation, scarring or infection. If they're persistent or widespread, professional extractions are usually the safer option.
